Growing up as the only girl of four children, I knew I wanted to fill the void of “sisters” that I wished for all my life. So I took a leap and decided to join a sorority during the spring semester of my freshman year. I went into the process a nervous wreck and had no idea what to expect. But from the moment I opened my bid and ran out to my beautiful sorority, I knew it was all worth it.
When most people think of sororities, they think of the image that movies have portrayed them to be… The hazing, the late-night parties, and “buying” your friends. However, those versions are highly exaggerated and forget to highlight their philanthropy, values, academics, and sisterhood that make a sorority special.
Sororities spend many hours giving back to their community and their philanthropy. On top of that, academics are extremely important and each sorority on my campus has a GPA requirement to remain in good standing. My sorority in particular has required study hours to ensure each sister is working hard to keep their grades the best they can be. That sounds scary, but it has helped me drastically during my new member process.
Greek life has opened the door to so many opportunities and has helped create a confidence that I did not have my first semester of college. I have such a strong support system from my sisters and a bond with each and every one of them. If I need to vent at 2 am or need help with my classes, they’re always going to be there for me. I have surely found the ones in my life that will be my rock during the high and low points. They push me to be the very best version I can be and never fail to bring a smile to my face.
If you want to get involved at your university, I highly recommend going Greek. It has been a life-changing experience that has shaped my time at college for the better.
